116 spread holiday cheer with SSC
A total of 116 runners of all ages helped local tankers raise funds on Wednesday as the Saipan Swim Club hosted its 3rd Jingle Bell 5km Fun Run along Beach Road.
Threatening skies did little to dampen spirits and the large crowd of runners was all smiles as they lined up behind the banner to start the event. The swimmers are always trying to raise funds to help them represent the Marianas in meets across the region and Wednesday evening they invited walkers, runners, and their pets to the Garapan Fishing Base across the street from the Kristo Rai church.
The journey south to the finish line at AJ’s Restaurant in Susupe provided participants a chance to stretch their legs along the Saipan Beach Pathway, and while the run was not designed to be a competitive event there were those who took it more seriously than others.
Veteran runner and accomplished triathlete Jack Kabriel was the first to reach the patio but no times were officially recorded for him to match up against his personal bests, and Chang Wang was the fastest female on the course. Among the children, Hunter Thorpe was the king of the kids and Grace Brostrom was the fastest girl.
All participants received jingle bells to keep them in spirit and lanyards with flashlights to help them stay on track. Complimentary beverages and dinner specials awaited them at AJ’s as well as the volunteers ready to bring the participants back to their vehicles at the Fishing Base.
