For the second year in a row, the Friends of the Mariana Islands thanked Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Inc. for its support for the Environmental Drainage Cleanup Project. This year’s project was at Tun Joaquin Doi Street and last Thursday Cecile Suda and Alex Brecia of Mobil were presented with the Performance and Financial Reports of the project, as well as a certificate of appreciation to Mobil Oil Mariana Islands Inc. by FMI president Marites A. Castillo.

The project was completed over nine weekends only because of the efforts of the FMI volunteers., in hopes of continuing support from Mobil.

Castillo also presented Suda with a proposal to continue with a new environmental project by cleaning the drainage areas of Isa Drive from the Airport Road intersection up to past San Vicente.

“Without the supplies and other support provided by the Mobil donation, the volunteers would not have been able to bring the environmental work on Tun Joaquin Doi Street to a successful conclusion,” said Castillo.

Other support for the project was given by Philippine Goods Construction owner, Danilo Villacruses, who donated several days of backhoe support free of charge.

Through Carlyn Reyes Tenorio, PTI also donated hats to keep the sun off the Friends of the Mariana Islands volunteers. Also, Beautify CNMI donated trash bags to the project, FMI also acknowledged and thanked former lawmaker Jacinta Kaipat and her family, and Angelo Villagomez for their untiring support.

“DPS has really been very helpful with the project by providing us cones during our cleanup project. Special thanks to former Commissioner Rebecca Warfield and Officer Tony Macaranas for helping the FMI with the project,” said Castillo.

The organization will continue with its activities in April, kicking off with a cleanup at the Garapan tourist district on April 6, 2008. This will be followed by cleanup from NMC to San Vicente Elementary School on April 13, 2008 and Lau-Lau Beach on April 20, 2008. (PR)
