A 41-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run accident along Isa Drive in Sadog Tasi Sunday early morning.

Grande C. Nonan, a Filipino, suffered head trauma and extensive lacerations in his upper and lower body. He was pronounced dead at 5:25am, according to the Department of Public Safety yesterday.

DPS spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said the vehicle was described as a beige or dark brown sports utility vehicle.

The DPS Traffic Investigation Unit is seeking the community’s assistance for information about the driver of the killer vehicle.

Ogumoro said that traffic and patrol officers were dispatched to Isa Drive after DPS received a report of the incident on Sunday at 3:16am. Medics and traffic investigators were summoned to the scene.

According to a witness, she and her friend, Nonan, were walking uphill using the eastbound shoulder of the road. Nonan was walking several feet in front of the witness.

As the two were passing the former L&T barracks, the witness observed an SUV speeding downhill, running off the highway, and hitting Nonan.

The witness was saved from being hit by the speeding vehicle because she was able to dart toward a fence line.

After the collision, the vehicle fled from the scene, heading west.

Ogumoro said that, at the time, the weather was clear and the road surface, including the shoulder of the highway, was dry.

The NMI Crime Stoppers Program is offering up to $1,000 cash reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the driver’s arrest.

Nonan is the third vehicular accident fatality in the CNMI this year.

On April 19, a 10-year-old boy was killed when a bicycle he was driving collided with a vehicle in lower Dandan Homestead.

On Feb. 8, a 65-year-old Chinese man died when a pickup truck hit him as he was crossing Middle Road in Garapan.

In 2007, four people were killed in separate vehicular crashes.
