Tinian Republican Party president Ramon M. Dela Cruz has congratulated Resident Representative Pete A. Tenorio for the passage of the federalization bill on Friday, May 9, and suggested that the date be forever celebrated in the CNMI as “Delegate Day.”

The bill, called the Consolidated Natural Resources Act of 2008, not only extends federal immigration law to the CNMI; it also contains a provision authorizing a Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives from the Northern Mariana Islands.

“On behalf of the Tinian Republican Party, it is my great honor to offer my sincere congratulations on the signing [of the bill]. …Friday, May 9, 2008, now marks another great step forward in the national and international political development of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and will be forever known as ‘Delegate Day,’” said Dela Cruz in his letter to the resident representative.

Tenorio had advocated for federalization of the CNMI’s immigration system—one of the few local officials to take this position.

Dela Cruz also invited Tenorio to Tinian for the first celebration of “Delegate Day,” to be held at the Tachogna Beach Main Pavilion at noon, on Saturday, May 17.

“As you are well aware, great challenges are in the immediate future for the island of Tinian and the CNMI as the United States military begins to take advantage of its land use options on Tinian and the Tinian International Airport becomes fully viable for regularly scheduled international flights. Your work at ensuring that the CNMI has a Delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives will help ensure that proper solutions will be found for the problems that will naturally develop as the military begins to arrive on Tinian and the new labor and immigration procedures are implemented on our beautiful island. For this, we, the people of Tinian, thank you. …Again, congratulations on a job well done from the people of Tinian and the CNMI.”

Besides Dela Cruz, the Tinian Republican Party officials also include 1st vice president Edward Shai, 2nd vice president Antonio SN Borja, secretary Carmen Quitugua Dela Cruz, and treasurer Gabriel Evangelista. (Saipan Tribune)
