The Saipan-based Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment held an appreciation night for all the sponsors of this year’s Tuloy-Aral Program last Saturday at the Hibiscus Hall of Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan.

OWWA welfare officer Leonor Mabagal said the appreciation night, which drew over a hundred people with its theme “Gabi Ng Pasasalamat,” is the Philippine government’s simple way of thanking the kindness and generosity of the sponsors.

“No words can describe how we feel about the kindheartedness of the community [in the CNMI],” she said, adding that they are all moved by the generosity of the CNMI community despite the difficult times on the island these days.

Philippine Consul General Wilfredo DL Maximo said the Philippine government is grateful to all the sponsors who have contributed to the worthy cause.

“These past years have not been the best of times economically for us here in the CNMI, and yet 58 individual sponsors and 13 organizations have risen above this constraint to reach out to 107 children of former overseas Filipino workers who are struggling in their daily lives…. we may be small in terms of land size but gigantic in terms of the size of the heart,” Maximo said.

During the event, the sponsors got the chance to see and hear appreciation messages from the scholars and Philippine government officials. As such, sponsors were also given the chance to give their impressions of what being a sponsor of the project means to them.

The Tuloy-Aral Program was launched on Dec. 16, 2004, to help less fortunate children of former overseas Filipino workers and other very poor and needy children to continue their elementary and high school education in the Philippines through sponsorship of Filipinos and other nationals abroad.

For school year 2007-2008, there are 206 scholars under the Tuloy-Aral Program worldwide and 107 of which are being sponsored by Saipan-based individuals and groups.

Maximo is extending his appreciation to all the Tuloy-Aral sponsors.

“Mabuhay kayong lahat! May we continue to count on your unceasing support to the Tuloy-Aral project as we prepare for our campaign for the next school year.”
