Pro se litigant topic revisited

It was annoying to read that Judge Frances Tydingco-Gatewood referred to John S. Pangelinan as the “most active pro se litigant” (he sues without a lawyer) in the Commonwealth.

I attribute that statement to the fact that she is a Guamer and not resident in the CNMI. I say that my long time acquaintance and former colleague Jack Angello is a contender for that title. Just based on his suits against our mutual former employer, NMC, he is a competitor, but he has had other cases with other organizations over the years that should put him over the top for this dubious honor.

True, he hasn’t threatened anyone in his filings or letters to the editor, so his prominence as a pro se litigant has been diminished, but he has been both consistent and persistent in his approach for many years, long before Mr. Pangelinan became prominent for his legal issues.

As a former newspaper editor myself, let me suggest great care in the use of superlatives (first, most, best) in all forms of reporting. Too often, it turns out that the sources being relied upon simply don’t know of other examples when they use such terms.
