Dandan Elementary School announced its school-wide essay contest winners in this year’s theme “If you were a Legislator, what laws would you create to make the community a safer place for people especially for children and why?”

Sixth grader Chelsea Yangilrefill triumphed over 13 other DES sixth graders who vied for the school’s prestigious award—a chance to read her essay piece aloud in front of her fellow graduating classmates at the DES 6th grade farewell ceremony this year.

According to DES principal Jonas M. Barcinas, the essay contest, that takes place every year, is also one of the criteria in determining who is going make up the graduating Top 10, valedictorian, salutatorian, and honorable mention awards aside from taking a rigorous test.

Barcinas said that every year, selected students of the graduating class are given a topic to write and present in front of the fourth and fifth grade classes.

“This is also help them [fourth and fifth graders] learn what to expect when they reach the sixth grade level,” Barcinas said.

The essays are then judged by the sixth grade teachers in the following criteria: Content connection with the theme, projection, presentation, and appearance.

The essays are being ranked from one to four—one being the lowest and four being the highest.

“All of them did a wonderful job, but we can only pick the best [out of all of them],” Barcinas said.

Sixth grader Joann Reyes came in second and Michael Santos placed third.
