The NMI Council for the Humanities wishes to remind public and private high schools about the upcoming submission deadline for “The Ties that Bind” Essay Contest.

Essays must be submitted to the Council on or before 4:30pm on Friday, May 30. Entries may be dropped at the Council’s office in the Reyes Building in Dandan or faxed to number 235-4786.

The contest is being co-sponsored by the Council and the Philippine Consulate General’s Office’s office to mark the 110th Philippines Independence Day.

The contest’s theme is “The Ties that Bind: Exploring the Historic Connections of the United States, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Republic of the Philippines.”

Each participating high school may submit up to three essays that will be scored by a panel of judges.

Winners will be announced after the flag-raising ceremony during the consulate’s Independence Day Celebration on June 12.

The first place winner will receive a round-trip ticket for two to Manila, which includes a tour of the Malacanang Palace and a chance to meet with Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Second place will get a cash prize of $300 while the third place finisher will receive $200.

Interested schools may contact the Council’s Program Officer, Scott Russell, for more contest details. [B][I](PR)
