The Division of Environmental Quality advises public not to swim or fish near or around the drainage at the Makaka Beach, south of the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan.

The drainage was blocked due to high volume of sand from recent waves, trapping fish, and other marine life. The stagnant water has become dangerous with decaying fish and other marine life.

The Department of Public Works removed the sand last Monday May 19. The sand removal resulted in the water being released into the lagoon and affected the water quality and safety of swimmers and fishermen.

Therefore, DEQ advises all residents and tourists not to swim or fish within 250 meters or 820 feet of the drainage site.

Water sampling will be preformed by DEQ’s laboratory staff to determine the level of bacteria and will announce if the drainage and surrounding beach site will be safe to swim or fish.

More information about water quality can be found at www.deq.gov.mp or by calling the DEQ office at 664-8500. (DEQ)
