Karidat postpones anniversary dinner
The Karidat Social Service is postponing its 28th Anniversary Dinner until Bishop Tomas A. Camacho of the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa is well enough to attend.
Bishop Camacho arrived last night from Hawaii after he successfully underwent surgery to remove a section of his lung that had been affected by cancer.
According to Dr. Mark Grattan, Camacho’s cardiothoracic surgeon at the Straub Hospital in Honolulu, the lung cancer was at an early stage (Clinical Stage 1), with no clinical evidence of spread, “and it was completely removed.”
The 28th Anniversary Dinner was originally set for this Saturday, May 24.
Executive director Angie V. Leon Guerrero said the anniversary dinner would have to be postponed until further notice, “depending on the bishop’s condition.”
This year, the Karidat Social Service is honoring Bishop Camacho at the organization’s anniversary dinner that will be held at the Aqua Resort & Spa.
Camacho founded the non-profit charitable organization 28 years ago that has provided emergency food, shelter, and services to thousands of people in the Commonwealth.
Also this year, Camacho, who was ordained bishop in 1985, will be stepping down as the highest ranking prelate in the islands when he submits his resignation to Pope Benedict XVI once he turns 75 on Sept. 18, as mandated by Canon Law.
“The Bishop has given so much to the community over the years, and we want to honor him before he resigns,” Leon Guerrero said.
Tickets for Karidat’s 28th Anniversary Dinner & Fundraiser are still being sold at the Karidat office or any of the board members for $50 each while raffle tickets are being sold at $1 each.
Leon Guerrero is urging all those who have already bought tickets to read the newspapers to find out when the event will take place.
