Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez has proclaimed May 21-26 as Memorial Week to allow the entire community to offer their respects to those who paid the ultimate price for the freedom of people of the Commonwealth.

“No words or deeds can truly convey our appreciation for the service members who were killed in the line of duty. Their decision to bear arms, leaving family and friends behind as they go into combat, speaks volumes of their special devotion to our nation. Although they may not be present their legacy resonates in life’s simplest freedoms,” yesterday’s proclamation states.

Villagomez is calling on the community to observe the week with appropriate ceremonies and activities in support and honor of our veterans.

A Memorial Day Ceremony will take place at the CNMI Veterans Cemetery in Marpi on Monday, May 26, at 9am.

Ruth Coleman, executive director of the CNMI Military and Veterans Affairs Office, said the ceremony is to “celebrate and to honor the brave men and women who served, with unwavering dedication and purpose, paid the ultimate sacrifice to keep the world safe, and secure the freedom we enjoy.”

The ceremony will feature music by the Pacific Winds Concert Band, as well as laying of the wreath, 21 Rifle Salute, and Echo Taps. The keynote speaker will be Rear Admiral William French, Commander Naval Forces Marianas. Coleman said everyone is welcome to attend the event.
