Alexis Shawnee Cabrera, 18, and Nadia Rae Benjamin, 17 were named the top graduates during the Kagman High School commencement exercise held last Tuesday at their school campus stage.

Cabrera, who led a class of 81, not only received Commissioner’s Award but was also conferred department awards in Fine Arts, Business, Japanese, Social Studies, Science, Math and English. She also obtained a Community Service Award and a Joeten scholarship.

“I’m excited. Hopefully, once I go to college, I will be a valedictorian again,” said Cabrera, who will be attending Mount Hood Community College in Oregon. She wants to be a social worker or a counselor here on Saipan in the future.

In addition to the Principal’s Award, Benjamin also got department awards in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Latin, and Physical Education. In the community awards category, she was given the OFEGRA, or the Women’s Affair Award.

“I am excited, honored, glad and sad, too. My graduating class is like my family. And also, I feel bad that some of the graduates could not attend because they are pursuing their military career,” said Benjamin.

She will be going to the Northern Marianas College and later on to the Gonzaga University, where she plans to double major in Finance and Accounting and Education.

“I truly and deeply want to be a teacher here on Saipan in the future,” she added.

Benjamin is known for her active involvement in school activities. She devoted herself to the National Honor Society as its vice president, STUCO president, member of the graduation committee and many other sports like the canoe team and softball.

The PTSA Recognition Award was given to Elaine Benjamin, while the PTSA Association Award went to Ali Nawaz.

The top seven graduates were Cabrera, Benjamin, Rosemarie Epiti, Margarita Agulto Aldan, Athena Ogumoro, Carson Shiro, Caroline Izawa, first honorable mention Catherine Hiney, and second honorable mention Alexandra Silva.
