Garapan Elementary School’s Kindergarten held a promotional ceremony for 28 students late Tuesday afternoon, with the theme “Wish upon a star.”

Kindergarten Mallard Awards were also handed out during the ceremony to Maria Calista, Donna Galvez, Sheila Sibetang and Jenine Perena.

“All kindergarten students were given Megaskills Medals, which symbolized the character trait that best fit each of them,” said Yvonne Gomez, GES principal.

In explaining the toned down commemoration of the event, Gomez said, “The school no longer holds graduation ceremonies for its students, opting to engage in more developmentally appropriate celebrations of accomplishments.”

Instead of pre-recorded music, the students sang the Star-Spangled Banner, the CNMI’s national anthem and the Garapan school song.

“GES Kindergarten students performed a variety of songs and skits that highlighted the things they learned before moving on to the first grade,” said Gomez.

Their theme song for the event was I Am But a Small Voice, popularized by Broadway star Lea Solonga.

Parents were treated to Science, Language Arts, Physical Education and Character Education samples that brought smiles to everyone’s faces.

Derwin Johnson, the 2008 Teacher of the Year, gave an inspirational message.

This year, 28 Kindergarten students will move on to the first grade.

The school acknowledged the parent volunteers for their decorations and for helping organize the event, along with teacher aides and staff.
