Freedom Air staff arrested for alleged theft of company funds
Police arrested on Wednesday an employee of Freedom Air Office on Rota for allegedly stealing the company’s $1,400 cash collection for the months of February and March 2008.
Derick Anthony Fujihira Babauta, 26, was arrested on Rota for theft.
In yesterday’s hearing, Superior Court associate judge David A. Wiseman allowed Babauta to post a $200 cash bail and $1,800 in unsecured bond.
Among the conditions for Babauta’s temporary liberty is for him not to leave Rota without court’s permission.
Detective Francis Manglona stated in his report that during an interview on May 28, 2008, Babauta admitted stealing money from Freedom Air to pay for his car, car insurance, gas money, household needs, and people he owed money from.
Manglona said the defendant had been sending money to his girlfriend who is staying outside Rota.
Babauta allegedly confessed that every time he collects cash from releasing cargo and signs off the airway bill, he would take the money from the box and destroy the airway bill.
Rota police started the investigation on May 26, 2008 when Freedom Air station manager Felicidad Boddy reported the theft.
Boddy showed to police copies of airway bills and money that were unaccounted for and were missing. Boddy said they tried but failed to locate Babauta. The manager said the defendant was also ignoring all their phone calls.
