Mieko to compete in Ironman Kansas
One of the CNMI’s top triathletes will take in the 2008 Ironman Kansas 70.3 race set this coming June 15 in Lawrence.
Meiko Carey and her husband Kevin will leave for Kansas on June 12 to compete in the 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1-mile run triathlon.
Mieko, who hopes to finish the race in just over five hours, said she prepared for the Kansas Ironman with the help of 2008 XTERRA Saipan Championship and Tagaman Triathlon winner Andy Noble, who gave her a weekly training regimen to follow
She said the schedule was difficult at first but that she has gotten used to it the past two months.
Mieko has been training six days a week at least two hours a day since she finished first in the women’s division of the Guam XTERRA last March.
“Each day was different. Monday was always a day off and Tuesday was usually a long run with a swim in the afternoon. Wednesday, meanwhile, consisted of one-and-a-half- to two-hour bike with sprints mixed in and a swim in the afternoon. Thursday was an hour or so run with sprints mixed in. Friday was sort of an easy ride. Saturday was run with sprints and ocean swim in the afternoon and Sundays were two-three hour rides with sprints followed by a run. It sounds like a lot, but it is actually pretty fun. Hopefully it will all pay off,” she said.
Aside from the challenge of entering the Kansas Ironman, Mieko is also excited to try out her new Giant Advanced road bike she specially bought for the race.
Mieko and Kevin will compete in the Kansan Ironman despite the former sustaining injuries early Tuesday morning after being struck by falling pieces of concrete being carried by a white/gray cement truck speeding down the backroad near San Vicente School.
Her husband Kevin said while other motorists stopped to help Mieko after she fell, the driver of the truck sped off.
He said Mikeo’s cut is not that bad, but the bone bruise may prevent her from doing well in the race after months of training.
“She is very disappointed. She said that it was fortunate that it struck her and not some child walking to school. It could have done much more damage,” said Kevin.
