A total of 59 took part in Tsunami Swimming Center Saipan’s American Red Cross swimming lessons which kicked off last Saturday at the Fiesta Resort and Spa Saipan south pool.

Tsunami Saipan manager Yuko Kimura said the number of participants was a great follow-up to the 56 that took part in the Red Cross lessons in November 2007 and the 69 that signed up only last April.

She said unlike previous clinics; however, last Saturday’s saw a healthy number of Level 2-3 swimmers.

“It’s means that they have improved their skills since last clinic. Tsunami Saipan also encourages the public to join the clinic to improve their swimming skills, learn about water safety, and if possible join the Tsunami Saipan swimming team,” she said.

Kimura said the goal is to certify as many 7 and-8-years-olds to Level 3 in the American Red Cross Program.

She said the participants not only included children but grownups who want to brush up on their swimming techniques.

One such adult, according to Kimura, is Juanita Fajardo, who along with sons Zachary and Adam took part in the clinic.

Fajardo said she enrolled in the Red Cross lessons to encourage her children, nephews, and nieces to take up swimming.

Kimura, meanwhile, said that at four years and 10 months old, Maxine Rabago, is the clinic’s youngest participant.

The Tsunami Saipan manager said it was her second time to attend the clinic but what was amazing was she tried to float herself several times.

Lending their expertise in the Red Cross clinic last weekend were instructors from Tsunami Saipan led by its president Stan Good, former national swimmers Tamiko Winkfield and Mike Villagomez, current Tsunami Saipan swimmers Marystar Welch, Shin Kimura, Kensuke Kimura, Mina Minami, Daniel Villegas, and Fumika Umeda, as well as Tsunami Saipan’s coach Hiro Kimura, assistant coach Val Welch and her daughter Ashley, and Villagomez’s daughter, Keana.

The ARC lessons will continue through the succeeding Saturdays of the month plus the first Saturday of the next month, July 5, at the Garapan landmark. All lessons will be from 10am to 11am.
