2 men in theft case are overstayers
Two men who were earlier arrested for theft at a restaurant in Susupe allegedly turned out to be overstaying in the CNMI for nearly 10 years now.
Police and Immigration officers are searching again for Ringyin Jin and Xirong Li, who were released from jail last month after being detained for four hours.
Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said yesterday that preliminary investigation showed that on May 6, 2008 at 11:48pm, an employee of Kaizoku Restaurant reported a theft of service incident at the establishment. As a result, Jin and Li were arrested.
After being detained at the Department of Corrections for the four-hour holding period, the two Chinese nationals were eventually freed.
While conducting follow-up investigation on the case, investigators learned through the Labor and Immigration Identification Data System that the two men are illegal aliens and that they have overstayed on Saipan for many years.
Ogumoro said the 35-year-old Jin arrived on Saipan in April 1997 and worked as a waiter at Ocean Fever Corp. According to LIIDS records, Jin’s contract expired in 1998 and has since had no other record of employment.
The 37-year-old Li arrived on the island in March 1996 and was employed at the now defunct garment manufacturer Winners Corp. as an ironer.
Li’s immigration records show that his contract expired in 1997. He has no further employment records elsewhere since then, Ogumoro said.
“Should you have any information regarding the whereabouts of these two illegal aliens, police investigators are asking that you call 911 or the Criminal Investigation Division at 664-9042/45,” the DPS spokesperson said.
Ogumoro said that, although police have no records to classify Jin and Li as armed and dangerous, the public is asked not to approach them but to instead contact the police as soon as they are spotted.
