Passenger in fatal Finasisu crash still critical at CHC
The passenger of a car that fell into a drainage along Tun Joaquin Doi Road in Finasisu Sunday afternoon was still in critical condition in the hospital as of yesterday.
Department of Public Safety spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said the passenger, James W. Mirefel, 29, a Yapese, suffered multiple abrasions, lacerations and bruises to the body.
Ogumoro said Mirefel has been admitted to the Commonwealth Health Center’s Intensive Care Unit for serious injuries.
The driver, Paul F. Torwan, 34, also a Yapese, was pronounced dead Sunday at 2:31pm. He had multiple abrasions and lacerations to the body.
Ogumoro said alcohol was a factor in the crash and that speed has not been ruled out, too.
The vehicle—a white 1991 Subaru Legacy four-door sedan—had extensive damage to the front and middle portion.
Ogumoro said that DPS received a report about an auto crash with injuries near Ladera International School on Sunday at 1:50pm. Traffic and patrols cars responded to the scene. Medics and traffic investigators were then summoned to the area.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Subaru car being driven by Torwan was traveling downhill on Tun Joaquin Doi Road when it ran off the road into the westbound shoulder and struck the concrete bridge of a gutter.
Medics immediately transported Torwan and his passenger, Mirefel, to CHC.
“The weather was cloudy and the road surface, including the shoulder, was wet,” Ogumoro said.
