Jess “Mr. Unorthodox” Wabol successfully defended his Championship Flight title in the 14th Annual San Roque Golf Tournament held last Saturday at the Marianas Country Club Golf Resort in Marpi.

The former Oleai Elementary School principal fired an even-par 72—after going 35 in the front and 37 in the back—to beat fellow veteran golfers Ed Manubusan and Joji Taguchi who both wound up with identical 75s.

The former judge, however, took second place on a scorecard tiebreak with Tagucghi settling for third.

A Flight was won by Frank Castro with his 83 followed by Ray San Nicolas and fomer DCCA secretary John L. Babauta who fired 85 and 86, respectively.

Ben Jones, meanwhile, topped B Flight with his 80 with Jay Muna taking second, 87, and Larry Tenorio third, 86.

“Golden Bear” Ted Malaran was No. 1 in C Flight following a score of 83. Freddy Salavaria took second with his 87 with Adony Matutino placing third with his 91.

In the Ladies Flight, Lorraine Babauta was first with her net 74 with Shirley Jones and Terry Tudela finishing as the runners-up with their respective 75 and 77 nets.

Seniors Flight then saw Larry Guerrero take the plum with his 67 net, followed by Steve Balakrishna and Felix Sasamoto, who were tied at 68.

The San Roque parish council wishes to thank all those who have gave their time and who donated to make this year’s tournament one of the best golf fundraising events for San Roque. The council also said kudos to the players and volunteers.

Wabol won last year’s tournament after firing a two-over par 74 following a 34 in the front and a 40 in the back performance in May 27, 2007, also at the Marianas Country Club Golf Resort.
