DPS gets 17 handguns from Guam
The Department of Public Safety will no longer have to worry looking for funds to buy guns when 20 police cadets complete the academy soon.
This, after the Guam Department of Agriculture Division of Aquatic and Wildlife donated to DPS their surplus stock of 17 Smith & Wesson 9mm handguns, worth a total of $8,000.
Guam Department of Agriculture’s Lt. Mike Reyes and Sgt. Mark Aguon presented the weapons to DPS commissioner Claudio Norita yesterday.
“We’re very appreciative of the assistance from the Government of Guam’s Department of Agriculture Division of Aquatic and Wildlife,” Norita told Saipan Tribune.
He said these are similar to the handguns that CNMI police officers are using right now.
The commissioner said the weapons are surplus because Guam’s Department of Agriculture is upgrading its weaponry by purchasing new handguns—the .40 calibers.
He said the 17 handguns were in Guam’s armory for about a year already.
“In a meeting with them, we were able to secure the 17 handguns with magazines,” Norita said.
“It’s a good timing for us and blessing really because we’re starting an academy [police] and I don’t need to buy 9mm handguns,” he said.
The commissioner said the donated handguns will be used by the new police officers.
