Babauta is the new Rotary Club president

The Rotary Club of Saipan announced a new set of officers yesterday at the Hyatt Regency Saipan during the installation of officers and directors luncheon.

Vicente “Ben” Babauta, the Social Store manager at the DFS Galleria, is the new Rotary Club president. He is also president of the Northern Marianas College Foundation and a director of the Tournament of Champion. “I really have my hands full, but still it’s fun” he smiles.

Babauta replaces past president Patrick Calvo.

“It has been an honor, but also a lot of challenges ahead of us. I look forward to a productive year with a lot of projects ahead of us. We will make dreams real as it is our theme this year,” said Babauta in his speech. “I will need each and every one of you actively participating to make dreams real for our children here in Saipan.”

This year’s new officers include Michael Brazel as vice president while Christine Parke is the secretary. Century Insurance general manager Nel Matanguihan was elected treasurer.

Elly Stoilova is still the director for Club Services. The new director for Community Services is Yoichi Matsumura. Vicky Concepcion is now the director for Vocational Services. PADG David Igitol is the director for International Services while Jon Anderson holds the post as director of Foundation Services.

The new sergeant-at-arms is Irene Tantiado and president-elect for RY 2009 to 2010 is VP Kim Forrester.

Double past president David Igitol is still the assistant district governor for the Pacific Basin Group Rotary Clubs, while Michael Brazel is the new group secretary.

Past president Ed Salas acted as emcee during Tuesday’s event.

During the installation luncheon, the group also presented several awards to its members. President Babauta and Vice Pesident Forrester presented the Citizen of the Year Award to past president Alex Sablan. VP Forrester received the Rotarian of the Year Award.

Some projects that the group is preparing for are the Las Vegas Night on July 19, Kagman Community park children playground in October, and the Man’Amko Luncheon in November.
