Islands’ car sales jump by 53 percent in June
Automotive dealers in the Commonwealth saw a major jump in car sales for the month of June over last year’s figures, an auspicious turn given the overall downturn in the local economy.
A report from the Commonwealth Automobile Dealer’s Association reveals a 53 percent increase in new car sales compared to June 2007.
“We are happy to see that this month’s sales numbers are up and our hope is that this trend will continue,” said CADA president Matthew Deets. “So far this year, sales numbers are slightly better than last year. …This kind of news helps build consumer confidence.”
Dealers sold 52 new vehicles in June, compared to 34 sold in the same month last year.
Microl Corp. saw the highest sales increase with 34 new car sales, a 126 percent spike. Sales at Joeten Motors remained the same as June of last year after the dealership sold 10 vehicles. Meanwhile, Triple J Motors saw a minor sales drop in June. Triple J sold eight cars last month, an 11-percent decline compared to last year when the dealership sold nine.
In total, dealers sold 34 sedans, five trucks, two vans and 11 sport utility vehicles last month. Toyota sales dominated the market with 27 units sold. The Toyota Corolla was among the top sellers, Deets noted, after dealers sold 19 of them. Deets added the consumer trend toward more fuel-efficient vehicle continues to drive sales.
Mazda sales followed those for Toyota in June, according to the report, with eight sold. Nissan sales finished closely behind Mazda with 6 sold.
