Beautify CNMI announced yesterday that it will be conducting its annual cleanup of the Koblerville Youth Center and Substation on July 20, from 8 to 12 noon.

The group wants to fill the area with more trees and not just flame trees but a mix of different species. Last year, the group planted 28 flame trees.

“We are focusing more on the street side of the youth center because the government has a long-term plan to turn that into a soccer stadium,” said Beautify CNMI’s Angelo Villagomez. “We cleaned up the place and for the last two years we have been maintaining it.”

The cleanup is part of Beautify CNMI’s several long-term goals to promote ecotourism in the Commonwealth, to reduce illegal dumping and littering, and to create an interconnected system of parks and trails.

“With the parade, people still leave garbage along the side of the street all along Beach Road. People picnicked during the weekend and even during the week there are always beer cans and other stuff around the ground,” said Villagomez.

“If Parks and Recreation and the Mayor’s Office didn’t have to spend all day picking up other people’s garbage along Beach Roads and other place, the government can actually spend time in making our neighborhoods nicer. And if people would just stop littering, it wouldn’t have to be Beautify CNMI that would have to do the job of others,” he added.
