Calvo pleads not guilty
Former Saipan Rotary Club president Patrick Mendiola Calvo maintained his innocence on charges that he sexually abused an underaged girl.
During Monday’s arraignment in the Superior Court, the 43-year-old Calvo waived a reading of the charging information. He also waived advisement of his personal and constitutional rights.
The defendant, through lawyer Anthony Long, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Calvo was charged with sexual assault in the second degree, sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree, sexual abuse of a minor in the third degree, and disturbing the peace.
Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja set the status conference for Sept. 1, 2008 at 1:30pm.
At the status conference, the judge said, the prosecution and the defense should be prepared to inform the court whether the case will be disposed of by a change of plea, trial, or other disposition.
Calvo surrendered to police on June 16 to face the charges. He was subsequently temporarily released on bail.
Detective Andrea C. Ozawa stated in her report that Calvo allegedly assaulted a 13-year-old girl on June 11.
Calvo allegedly told the girl not to inform her mother of what he did to her. The minor, however, told her mother about the incident.
Calvo is the owner of Calvo’s Nursery and Landscaping and the Island Farmers Market. He was the president of the Saipan Rotary Club when he surrendered to police.
