The Saipan Building and Fixing Computer Users Group conducted a Practical Electricity Training at the Filipino Workers Resource Center for four consecutive Saturdays in July, from 6pm to 9pm. There were 29 OFW students who completed the training.

SBFCUG was founded on Dec. 8, 2006 by Marcelo “Mar” Masilungan, Building and Fixing Computers Course volunteer-instructor and White Coconut’s computer technical support specialist. The group is composed of graduates of BFC, one of the courses being offered at the POLO-FWRC for OFWs.

During the monthlong training, SBFCUG studied practical electricity—Ohm’s law, identified which circuit needed home run, sizes of cables needed, designed and installed complete electrical outlets (GFCI outlet for kitchen, 220 volts for dryer and complete house circuit, including those needed for home appliances) for a mock-up three-bedroom house.

The training was made possible through the mentorship of engineer Manny Cisnero, and Philippine-licensed master electricians Angel Deliva and Roland Vicencio. All three are active SBFCUG members who willingly and freely shared their knowledge and experience to enhance the skills of other group members.

According to SBFCUG chair Amado Tumbaga, other trainings lined up for this year include AutoCad and Web/Graphics Design, plus a review for Computer Service Technician License Certification for BFC graduates. At present, the group has 13 Computer Service Technicians who are certified by the Electronics Technicians Association International.

Masilungan and the SBFCUG officers and members are grateful to the Philippine Consulate General, particularly its Philippine Overseas Labor Office, for its unceasing support to the group’s initiatives. (PR)
