Most teenagers spent the summer months sleeping in until noon or swimming everyday, but for Tinian’s eight AmeriCorps volunteers, summer meant working with young children and helping the community.

The volunteers spent their days working at the 2nd Annual Summer Library Reading Camp, where they helped 94 children read, make crafts and use the computer.

Tinian Public Library, AmeriCorps and Tinian Elementary School jointly sponsored the camp.

Four of the volunteers also helped with the Tinian Mayor’s Office Romper Program. The volunteers, Tasha S. Cruz, Mary Joanne Daria, Eda Sakisat and Nisha Shrestha, recently took part in the Romper graduation this past weekend.

“I was so pleased. They did a great job with it,” said Geri Willis, CNMI/PSS AmeriCorps program director.

The volunteers made slideshow CDs for the parents of the children, Willis said.

“The parents were saying, ‘thank you so much for allowing your AmeriCorps students here,’” she added.

The AmeriCorps is currently taking applications for the program.
