Sorensen Media Group donates $2.24K to OES
Oleai Elementary is more than $2,000 richer, thanks to a donation from Sorensen Media Group.
On Tuesday, Tina Palacios, operations manager for Sorensen, presented the school with an educational tax credit for $2,236.62.
Last year, Palacios decided all tax credits would go to CNMI public schools, not private schools, as had previously been the case.
“I went to private school, but I realized I should give it to someone who’s not making money,” she said.
On Monday, Palacios tried to donate the money to Hopwood Junior High School, a school Sorensen donated $2,700 in tax credits to in April, but because of scheduling conflicts, Palacios was not able to present the check to anyone.
The longer she waited to give the check away, the more it was taxed, so she decided to call Oleai Elementary instead, she said.
“I called the Oleai principal and said, ‘I’ll be there,’” she said. “Of course they said, ‘I want it.’”
In April, Palacios told Saipan Tribune, Sorensen challenged all businesses, big or small, to donate their tax credit as well.
“It’s a tax break. So why not give them to schools where they really need it. If everybody just helps each other out, surely we can overcome all of this,” she said.
