Hyatt Regency Saipan has put together a committee composed of employees from operations and the executive department to implement hotel-wide programs to create environmental awareness and decrease environmental impact.

The F.O.R.C.E., which stands for Family of Responsible and Caring Employees, will focus on initiatives for water and energy management and conservation, waste reduction and recycling, and staff and community awareness campaigns.

“Our goal is to constantly invest in the protection of our environment which we predict will have a long lasting impact on the community as well,” said Nick Nishikawa, general manager of Hyatt Regency Saipan. “Our guests who have visited the Marianas always mention the beautiful skies and clean air. These are part of the reasons that visitors return to the islands year after year.”

As part of the Green Team’s campaign, changes have already taken place in all of the hotel’s departments. The engineering department started energy conservation over two years ago by using energy efficient light bulbs that significantly reduced the consumption of energy, and organizes the recycling of biodegradable products. Hotel memos and announcements are sent through the e-mail, reducing the use of Xerox paper. From the kitchen to the spa, locally grown products are brought for use in the menu.

Josephine Mesta, the chair for the Communication and Awareness committee said, “The committees develop the Green Team campaigns and search for ways to educate the Hyatt employees.”

“By educating the staff, we can hope for them to drive changes at home and beyond the workplace,” Mesta added.
