The Northern Marianas Amateur Sports Association will hold its regular monthly meeting tonight, Aug. 7, 7pm at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium conference room.

NMASA president Michael White is also requiring representatives of golf, sailing, and athletics to attend the meeting as the CNMI’s participation in the 2009 Pacific Mini Games in Cook Islands would be discussed.

So far, only the three sports have signified interest in taking part in the quadrennial event next year.

Aside from the 2009 Pacific Mini Games dominating the meeting today, NMASA member associations will vote for the best athletes for the previous month (June) in four categories (male, female, male student, and female student) during the August general membership meeting.

NMASA reminds associations that will be nominating their athletes to submit written nominations in multiple copies to be distributed to members during the meeting.

Cook Islands last year announced that 15 sports will be featured in the 2009 edition of the quadrennial Games. The 15 sports are up from the 12 offered during the VII Pacific Mini Games held in Koror, Palau in 2005.

Athletics, table tennis, triathlon, va’a or outrigger canoeing, and weightlifting, bodybuilding, boxing, lawn bowls, rugby league, and touch rugby are the sports lined up for the 2009 Cook Islands Pacific Mini Games.

White earlier said the CNMI could possibly send athletes in six of the sports, namely athletics, golf, table tennis, triathlon, sailing, and va’a or outrigger canoeing.

However, because of funding issues, it seems like only three—athletics, golf, and sailing—would be sending teams to Cook Islands next year.
