After months of construction on Garapan Central Park’s skateboard park, local skaters can look forward to a soft opening in October.

Park construction is expected to be complete by Sept. 26, and the Saipan Rotary Club hopes the park will be officially open by October.

According to the Island Skate Society, the cost of the project has reached nearly $150,000.

Deirdre McClarin, secretary of the Society, expressed particular gratitude to project sponsors Dennis Yoshimoto and Laurie Peterka of the Rotary Club.

Additional sponsors included the Northern Marianas Housing Corp., Division of Parks and Recreation, and members of the Senate.

Rotary Club president Ben Babauta received a shirt and certificate of appreciation from the Society.

McClarin presented pictures of the “Graffiti Paint-Over Project,” which will adorn the park’s walls.

A group of the Society’s skateboarders attended Tuesday’s Rotary Club meeting to thank Babauta and the Club for their support.
