A leading federal agent in the investigation of the alleged scheme involving Lt. Gov. Timothy Villagomez and three others to defraud the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. said this week that a local Department of Public Safety detective, Jesse L. Dubrall, was instrumental in the case and commended his service.

An armed forces reservist recently called up for duty, Dubrall is now in training in California ahead of a likely deployment to Iraq, several sources said.

Dubrall worked closely with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local authorities in a special white collar crime task force to help build the case against Villagomez and his three alleged co-conspirators in the months prior to his deployment, according to FBI agent Dana McMahon.

On Monday, after the defendants made their first appearance in federal court, McMahon thanked Dubrall for his assistance.

“There were a lot of local aspects to this case that we needed help on and Jesse was always right there for us,” McMahon said. “He was really great. I’d like to thank him and DPS.”

Dubrall’s record as a DPS officer includes involvement in several high-profile cases, according to prior news reports, such the 2007 arrest of five CUC employees on corruption charges and the capture of two men charged with robbing poker arcades that same year.

“He’s a great guy, a seasoned and experienced investigator,” former DPS commissioner Claudio Norita said.
