Rangamar lifts cagebelles to lone win in FIBA caging

The CNMI cagebelles will not go home empty-handed after all.

Lia Rangamar went 6-for-10 from downtown to lift the CNMI to a 64-51 win over Palau in the last day of the 7th FIBA Oceania Youth Tournament Saturday at the University of Guam Fieldhouse in Mangilao.

The lone win saved the CNMI from finishing last in the tournament, as it placed seventh out of the eight teams that competed in the weeklong caging.

The race for the first win in the tournament was close in the first half with the CNMI and Palau tied at 13-all after the opening period.

But the CNMI began taking control of the game in the second period after limiting Palau to nine points in that canto.

After Sweety Kalbesang’s basket moved Palau within one, 22-23, the CNMI answered with six straight points and silenced its foe in the last four minutes of the second period to take a 29-22 halftime lead.

Rangamar drilled seven of the CNMI’s 16 points in the second period to give the Commonwealth a seven-point advantage.

The CNMI cagebelles increased the lead to 16 points, 50-34, entering the fourth period, as Rangamar led the CNMI’s breakaway in the second half when she drilled 10 of their 21 points in the third period, making two triples.

The CNMI never looked back from thereon, relegating Palau to last place.

Rangamar finished with 31 points, finding her range early as she connected on three triples in the first period. Noelle Calvo chipped in 12.

Australia’s Opals prevailed the in title match against Tahiti, 108-32, while Fiji won the battle for third place beating Guam, 75-66.

Papua New Guinea finished fifth, topping New Caledonia, 90-64
