PSS to hold 3-day accreditation institute
The Public School System will be holding an accreditation institute on Oct. 22-24, according to Education Commissioner Rita Sablan.
The PSS Board of Education, however, will still decide on where they will hold the three-day activity, which is in preparation for the visit of accreditation officials from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges this school year.
Sablan explained that the goal of this institute is for PSS to help the schools prepare for the WASC visit.
“We are inviting the private schools to attend the institute,” Sablan said.
The three-day activity will also give the PSS leadership a chance to review what the principals are doing to improve their schools, Sablan stressed.
WASC is recognized as one of six regional associations that accredit public and private schools, colleges, and universities in the United States.
The Western region covers institutions in California and Hawaii, the territories of CNMI, Guam, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, the Pacific Basin, and East Asia, and areas of the Pacific and East Asia where American/International schools or colleges may apply to it for service.
Meanwhile, the WASC Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges is set to visit the Northern Marianas College on Nov. 3-5.
The commission has ordered NMC to provide reasons by then why its accreditation should not be terminated.
NMC’s annual report is due next week, Oct. 15.
Earlier, the commission identified several major points in which NMC failed to address problems.
Next year, the commission will have a meeting, where they will decide based on the recommendation of the visiting team whether to reaffirm or terminate NMC’s accreditation.
