NMC honor society expanding membership
Officers of the Northern Marianas College International Honor Society is encouraging interested students to join the group and avail of the many benefits of being a member.
The organization’s president, Roxanne Ferrer, said this is part of their expansion effort.
A booth had been put up at the NMC hallway for interested students to fill up application forms.
Ferrer said there are currently nine active members of the Society, including the other officers, Lorna Manahane (vice president), Nerine Villagomez (acting public relations officer) and Diane Mallari (member).
Ferrer said her group has been active in community service.
They recently painted the bus stop in Chalan Kiya.
Phi Theta Kappa, an international honor society for two-year colleges, was founded in 1918 and is the largest and most prestigious honor society recognizing academic excellence around the world.
Ferrer said the society would benefit members in their quest for academic and leadership excellence at NMC and beyond.
A minimum of 3.5 cumulative GPA is required for any student wanting to join the society.
They should have competed 15 credit hours of college-level courses (110 level and above) and they must not have a D or F for a class, unless retaken with C or higher.
Members will have the opportunity to serve the college and the community, develop leadership and enjoy camaraderie, wear the PTK regalia and receive recognition at graduation and a chance for a scholarship to a four-year college.
The deadline for submission of application forms will be next Friday, Oct. 17.
Scholarship benefits include $36 million in transfer scholarship offered to PTK members by more than 600 four-year colleges and universities, $130,000 in scholarships awarded annually by PTK, automatic inclusion in PTK’s new comprehensive transfer preparation program and letters of recommendation sent to college admission counselors.
