San Mig caging kicks off

The Inaugural San Miguel Beer Basketball League opened yesterday at the CIC Basketball Court in Garapan.

The league organized by the Pilipino Contract Workers Association, Inc. started with the traditional parade of participating teams, and had PILCOWA, Inc. officials and representatives delivering message for players and spectators in the inaugural event.

Seven teams are competing for this year’s championship. The list include Century Insurance, AON Insurance, C&R Distributors, Diamond Auto Care, MIGS, Olivos, and Pacific Trading Corporation.

Century Insurance and AON Insurance played in the first game in the league, but results of the match were unavailable at press time.

PILCOWA president Ronnie Doca and Jun Concillado were present at the opening, leading the ceremonial toss between AON and Century.

League coordinator Fando Muleta said games in the PILCOWA-SMB caging will be played three times a week, every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.

There will be two games each playing day with the first match every Thursday starting at 7pm. Games during weekends will begin early.

Muleta added the caging will have a round-robin format with the No. 1 team gaining the pennant and an automatic slot to the semifinals.

The six remaining teams will battle for the last three semis tickets.

Before the playoffs, the league will host an All-Star game, while at the conclusion of the inaugural league, organizers will recognize the league’s MVP and Finals MVP, members of the mythical five, and the players who will top the rebounds, assists, steals, 3-pointers, and scoring departments.

PILCOWA officials and league organizers thanked San Miguel Beer and PTC for sponsoring the inaugural caging which aims to promote a healthy lifestyle in the community through the sport of basketball.
