The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. is going to intensify its efforts to clean up the electrical grid of debris, tree branches, or vegetation in preparation for typhoons.

Acting CUC spokesperson Gary Camacho told Saipan Tribune they are in fact already doing the line clearing, but that they are going to step up efforts in the next couple of weeks because of the typhoon season.

Camacho said CUC and the Department of Public Works will be working together to protect the electrical distribution grid by removing tree branches and vegetations around power lines.

He said CUC and DPW are expected to finalize their memorandum of understanding in the coming weeks.

“CUC will do the actual physical line clearing around the area and DPW will be assisting us in the removal and disposal of the debris,” he said.

Camacho said in the last few years the utility agency had difficulties in conducting the line clearing operation because of broken down equipment.

He said CUC’s bucket trucks have already been repaired and are now ready for the clearing operation.

CUC has five bucket trucks and it is planning to purchase at least three more.

Camacho said the operation will benefit both consumers and CUC as debris, trees, and vegetation located near the electrical lines would cause the electrical system to go down during typhoons, affecting power supply to many areas.

“We want to ensure that the system is protected should inclement weather comes upon us,” he said.
