Man gets 13-day term for domestic violence
The Superior Court has slapped a 13-day prison term on a man who beat up his wife during an argument at their house in Chinatown.
Associate Judge Ramona V. Manglona sentenced Jesus Ilo Seman to one year in prison, all suspended except for the first 13 days, for assault and battery.
Manglona sentenced the 32-year-old Ilo to one year in jail, all suspended except for the first 13 days, for interfering with a domestic violence report.
Following a plea agreement, the judge gave the defendant credit for the 13 days he has already served in prison.
The two sentences shall run concurrently, according to Manglona.
This means Ilo would be freed at once because he has already spent 13 days in jail after being arrested on Aug. 25, 2007.
Manglona placed the defendant on two years’ probation and ordered him to pay a $250 fine, $25 in court assessment fee, $100 in annual probation service fee, and $230 in restitution.
Ilo was required to perform 60 hours of community service and write a letter of apology to the victim. He is barred from drinking alcohol during the entire probationary period.
Ilo and his lawyer, Assistant Public Defender Richard Miller, signed a plea agreement with the government, represented by Assistant Attorney General Michael Evangelista. He pleaded guilty to assault and battery, and interfering with a domestic violence report.
The beating happened in August 2007. Police said that prior to the incident, Seman and his wife were drinking at a nightclub in Garapan.
Later that morning, Seman woke up his wife and confronted her about her dress. This led to an argument. The defendant then punched his wife in the left ear.
Police said the wife tried to fight back, but Seman started throwing things at her. She, however, managed to duck.
Seman later threw a plastic bowl full of food, hitting her left shoulder.
When Seman walked back into the bedroom, the victim grabbed a cell phone and ran outside the house where she called police. Responding police officers arrested the defendant.
