Isaiah beats Ezekiel anew in Genesis Cup
Jun Pantaleon exploded for 31 points to lift Isaiah to an 80-68 victory over Ezekiel in the 3rd CIM-FCC Inter-Color Basketball League-Genesis Cup Saturday night at the CIM-FCC Basketball Court in Gualo Rai.
The victory was second in a row for Isaiah, who recorded its first win also against Ezekiel, 70-65, during the opening of the league two weeks ago.
Pantaleon top-scored in Isaiah’s debut against Ezekiel and was unstoppable anew in their second meeting.
Pantaleon teamed up with James Wabinga in leading Isaiah’s attack in the first half with the latter firing 17 points and the former adding 12 to give their team a 37-25 halftime lead.
Ezekiel played without its main gunner Kae Bernardo in their second outing with Isaiah. Bernardo scored 27 points in their first meeting. Sans Bernardo, M.J. Capalad and Rocky Topacio tried to carry the load for Ezekiel, but the duo combined for only 18 points letting their team to trail by 12 markers after the first half.
Pantaleon continued to cause damage to Ezekiel’s defense in the second half, adding 18 points. Wabinga slowed down a bit, making only eight, but Dindo Pablo, who was scoreless in the first half, was on target from downtown hitting three triples. Pablo finished with 11 markers, while Wabinga had 25 to help Isaiah posted an easy victory.
Capalad and Topacio remained at the forefront of Ezekiel’s offense, drilling 14 and 12 markers, respectively, in the second half, but they lacked support from their teammates. Only Capalad and Topacio made more than three field goals for Ezekiel in the second half.
Capalad led Ezekiel’s losing cause, tallying 23 points, while Topacio chipped in 21.
The win put Isaiah in the early lead in the four-team league.
Daniel is in second place, following its 94-77 debut win over defending champion Jeremiah on Friday.
The league will have a three-round robin format in the regular season with the top two teams advancing to the championship match in December.
