Politicians, zombies, and witches were out in full force at the American Red Cross NMI Chapter’s 20th Annual Club 200 fundraiser Saturday night. This year’s event, held at the Hyatt Regency Saipan, featured a Halloween theme, complete with costume contests. Willy K from Hawaii was the featured musician.

“It went really well,” said Red Cross executive director John Hirsh at the end of the night. “The bands were great. A lot of people got into the spirit. The Hyatt did a great job.”

The event is an opportunity for the Red Cross to show their gratitude to all donors, he said.

“Whether you put a couple of coins in our boxes at the store or write a big check, you’re all donors,” Hirsh said.

He estimates 1,200 people were in attendance at the event. Tickets costs $100 each.

Many attendees got into the Halloween spirit by dressing up. “Sarah Palin” was in attendance, as was “Barack and Michelle Obama.”

Elizabeth Henke, dressed as Palin, said she planned to attend as the Republican Party’s vice presidential nominee since she got a wardrobe makeover. She said she was not upset that she didn’t win the costume contest.

“We’re going straight to the White House, and that’s the big contest,” she said.

Sharmaine Casquero, dressed in a skintight red dress with protruding feathers, won the women’s contest, while Jeffery Warfield, dressed as Flavor Flav, won the men’s costume contest. Russ and Kanae Quinn won the couple’s category as Popeye and Olive Oyl.

The other big contest of the evening was the drawing for the $20,000 grand prize. Willy K drew the winning number belonging to Teresa Palacios.

“I can’t explain it. I’m overwhelmed,” Palacios said after winning.

She said she would use the money to pay bills and then discuss with her husband, McGarrett, and their kids how to spend the rest of the money.

Leslie Rodriquez won the 1st place prize of two round-trip tickets to New York City. Geraldine Cruz won the 2nd place prize of $10,000.

Earlier in the evening, employees from Pacific Islands Club performed a zombie-inspired dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” while Joeten was recognized for its regular contribution to the Red Cross.

Hirsh said there are already plans for next year’s event, which will feature a different theme.

“The wheels do start turning early,” he said.
