Zapanta rolls to seventh Bing victory
Raphael Zapanta reasserted his mastery in the Bing Prince of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament, winning his seventh monthly championship last Sunday at the Capital Bowling Center.
After yielding the title to J.D. Torres last month, the 13-year-old Chacha Junior High School student returned with the vengeance at the Garapan bowling venue with an eye-popping four-game series total of 765 pinfalls.
The youngest son of bowling diehards Ross and Gigi Zapanta let his intentions known right from the get-go by knocking down 224 pins in his first game.
He slowed down a bit in the second game, as he shot a pedestrian 155 before bouncing back with rolls of 184 and 202 in his last two games to finish with an average of 191.25.
The October Bing victory adds to the already crowded trophy case of the bowling prodigy, which includes championships in February, March, May, June, July, and August editions of the roll-off.
Marion McKenzie finished runner-up last Sunday with 587 pinfalls built around rolls of 150, 164, 152, and 121—good for a 146.75 average.
Leanne Yarobwemal complete the Top 3 after knocking down 573 pinfalls and averaging 143.25 following a four-game series of 135, 157, 151, and 130.
Zapanta, McKenzie, and Yarobwemal took home $20, $15, and $10, respectively for their performances with the October champion also winning a case of Waioka sardines courtesy of Micronesian Brokers, Inc.
Zack Cruz (565), J.D. Torres (501), Troy Verdaguer (480), Shelly Sablan (446), and Macrel McKenzie (344) also took part in the monthly roll-off organized by the Saipan Bowling Association and sponsored by MARPAC.
In related news, April winner Kitz Barja is currently leading the October Budweiser King of the Lanes with a score of 849 (212.25), while January Queen of the Lanes Emi Williams is pacing the women’s division with her 731 (182.75).
