Returning Ghasias Brothers sent a strong message to the rest of the field in the 2008-2009 World Organized Rocball Community League after pulling off a 76-71 upset over defending champion Evenflow Saturday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.

Ghasias Brothers missed the league the past several years, but prior to their absence, they won several championships.

In their first game this season, Ghasias Brothers dominated Evenflow, leading by 12, 64-52, at the end of the four regular sets.

Ghasias Brothers swept the first three sets, 17-10, 17-11, 18-13, but failed to notch a juice-out win when Evenflow recovered in the fourth set, 18-12.

In Rocball, a leading team wins a match only if it also prevails in the last set. If not, the game will go in overtime with the leading team needing only one set to take the match. The trailing squad must win two sets in overtime to steal the game.

Evenflow extended the game into the second set with its 1-2 victory in the first-set okon. But Ghasias Brothers recovered their bearings, eking out a 10-8 win to stun Evenflow in the league’s opening game.

Freddie Pelisamen led Ghasias brothers with 26 points. He had four aces, four kees, two goals, and four jams. Pelisamen’s four jams is a new record in the league. A jam is scored when a receiving team player spikes down a served ball at the net. It is one of the most difficult plays to make in Rocball.

Also winning their opening match were Naturals, Soul Rebels, Fanians, and No-Mercy.

Naturals juiced-out Uraiwak, 59-32.

Willie Aguilar and Fiden Denri led Naturals with nine points apiece. They combined for four aces, two kees, and a goal.

In the third game, Soul Rebels outclassed Section A in four sets, 69-21. Soul Rebels won all four sets with Jordan Igisomar and Ben Lisua leading the team’s attack. The duo tallied 10 aces, three kees, and two goals for 32 points.

Fanians (formerly Try-Outs) recorded the third juiced-out win of the night, downing FSM Rebels, 58-23.

Jazy Roskow was the game’s heavy hitter, nailing 20 points on eight aces and two kees. Rex Jose and Youme and Larry Sharry made one goal apiece for Fanians.

In the last game of the day, Okies pulled of a 55-52 win over No-Mercy.

Myron Laniyo paced No-Mercy with 26 points in the loss, making four aces, two xunks, and seven kees, which tied Pelisamen for the most points scored on opening day.
