Mount Carmel Church was full of mourners yesterday as Staff Sgt. Julian Manglona was remembered.

Manglona passed away earlier this month in Fort Hood, Texas, after collapsing during a 6-mile training run. He was 39.

During yesterday’s ceremony, Gov. Benigno Fitial delivered remarks, expressing his gratitude for Manglona’s service and his condolences for his death. Washington Representative Pete A. Tenorio presented Manglona’s family with a letter stating his condolences, while Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sandy Tudela commended Manglona’s 17 years on the force.

Brig. Gen. Alexander I. Kozlov, Commanding General of the 9th Mission Support Command in Hawaii, gave Manglona’s wife and family an Army Accommodation medal.

After the service, mourners headed to the Veteran’s Cemetery in Marpi, where Manglona received a full military service with honors rendered.

“The services overall, from beginning to end, were very honorable and respectful,” said Ruth Coleman, Office of Veteran’s Affairs. “Something the family will have a lasting memory of. It’s something we always give to fallen soldiers. It’s very dignified.”

She said the family was pleased with the honors bestowed upon their husband, son and brother, but would have Manglona back in a heartbeat, if possible.

Relatives from Washington, Oregon, Rota and Tinian traveled to attend the day’s events.

Manglona was an army reserve soldier from the 100th Battalion, assigned to the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. He was preparing for his second tour of duty. He left behind his wife, Brenda, and eight children.
