Attao rules Rotary golf fundraiser

Vince Attao bested 28 other golfers to win the Rotary Club of Saipan’s 2008 District Governor’s Charity Golf Tournament Sunday on the west course of the Laolao Bay Golf Resort.

Attao carded a net score of 70.80 in the double peoria tournament, which is a fundraising event of the Rotary Club. Attao struggled on the front and back nines with a 50 and 52, but with his 31.20 handicap he still finished on top of the field.

In second place was Yasu Irinaka, who had a net 71 after scoring a 41 and 42 on the front and back nines, respectively. Irinaka sported a 12 handicap.

Former Superior Court presiding judge Ed Manibusan completed the Top 3 with his net 71.40. The 3.4-handicapper Manibusan recorded the lowest gross score of the day after taming the greens and fairways of Laolao with his 35 on the front and 40 on the back nine.

The Top 3 finishers received cash prizes, while golfers who placed fourth to 15th took home gift certificates.

Attao won $500, Irinaka pocketed $400, and Manibusan received $300.

Saipan Community Church pastor Roger Abe won the closest to the pin contest in hole No. 7 and placed 15th in the field.

Also making it to the Top 15 were Kim Kwon Nam (71.45); Ben Duenas (72.20); Jay Santos (72.40); Umezawa Tadashi (73); Lee Wan Sub (73.40); Ray Villagomez (74); Frank Murakami (74), Greg Gamboa (74.20); Dennis Yoshimoto (74.40). Jess Wabol (74.60), and Shinichiro Kobayashi (74.60).

Rotary Club of Saipan president Ben Babauta along with the club’s district governor Nobu Shindo handed the awards to winners.

Babauta said proceeds from the tournament will be used for the construction of the Kagman Community Children’s Park.

The club president thanked golfers for participating in the annual tournament, and individuals and companies which donated prizes for the weekend event.
