Century Insurance secures pennant
Century Insurance claimed the pennant title in the Inaugural 2008 PILCOWA-San Miguel Beer Basketball League after winning the continuation of its match against C&R Distributor/NRG in overtime, 104-96, Sunday night at the CIC Centre Basketball Court in Garapan.
The Century-C&R tiff was first played on Oct. 25, but was suspended due to rain with the match tied at 61-all, after the third quarter. The game resumed Sunday and ended in deadlock anew after 40 minutes of play, 82-all.
Melvin Villarin drilled a triple in the last six seconds of the regulation to send the game into overtime.
Wowie Abuel, who in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter missed crucial free throws which could have secured the win early for Century, canned two triples in overtime to lift his team to a eight-point win.
Jawn Joyner made several steals in the extra frame resulting to many fastbreak baskets for Century, which finished the regular season with a 5-1 record, winning its last five games. Century dropped its debut during the league opener, bowing to Aon Insurance, 87-103.
MIGS also finished with a 5-1 record, but lost the tie and the pennant to Century, as the latter prevailed in their duel last week, 98-94.
Abuel paced Century in their win against C&R, firing 30 markers, while Bing Marasigan chipped in 26. Three other Century players finished in double figures with Larry Palero adding 17 and Joyner and Gil Gapor contributing 12 apiece.
In other results, C&R played its second match Sunday and bounced back with a 100-83 victory over San Miguel Light.
James Villacrusis waxed hot from downtown, drilling four triples and scoring 29 markers to lead C&R’s win.
C&R improved to a 2-3 record and will play its last game against Aon Insurance. The C&R-Aon match was set for last week, but was suspended due to rain and will resume this week.
C&R handed San Miguel its fifth loss in as many games.
San Miguel hopes to enter the win column this Thursday when it faces Olivos.
Diamond Auto Care played in the third game of the night and thwarted Aon Insurance, 109-96.
Diamond finished the regular season with a 3-3 record, while Aon dropped to a 2-3 slate.
