Philippine Airlines has announced a plan to launch flights to Saipan, but the Commonwealth Ports Authority says no formal talks are underway between PAL and CPA.

Philippine News Agency, a state-run news wire service, reported last week that the Philippine flag carrier will use some of its new jets on flights to Saipan, as well as key U.S. cities such as San Diego, Chicago, New York, and Seattle.

But in a phone interview yesterday, newly appointed CPA executive director Efrain F. Camacho said he was not aware of any such plans by PAL. “It doesn’t mean they have not done anything toward that goal. Other people may know about it. I just hadn’t heard of it yet,” said Camacho, who took the top management post at CPA on Monday.

“But that’s good news indeed, if it’s true,” he added.

PNA, in the Nov. 4 report, said PAL is spending $1.4 billion on new aircraft, a move that make the airline’s fleet one of the youngest in the region. The fleet upgrade program is expected to be completed before the end of this year.
