Micronesia postmasters get ready for holidays
Representatives of the different post offices in the Micronesian region are wrapping up today their two-day meeting on Saipan with officials from the United States Postal Service as part of preparations for the Christmas holidays.
“We want to make sure that their mail and packages would be delivered on time,” said Leo Tudela, Director of the Asia-Pacific Relations of Global Business, USPS, based in Honolulu and Washington D.C.
Tudela said they have been doing this joint USPS/Freely Associated States Postal Service Christmas Operations Meeting every year. This time, the meeting is being held at the Chamolinian Room of the Hyatt Regency Saipan.
“We have been holding this kind of preparations every month of November. All areas, including all four states of the Federated States of Micronesia [Chuuk, Pohnpei, Kosrae, and Yap], Palau, Marshall Islands, Guam and the CNMI are represented,” Tudela said.
Representing the CNMI is Hector Medina, Postmaster of the Saipan Post Office.
Other participants are Glen Sakagawa, Senior Plant Manager of USPS in Honolulu; Randall Sobol, Operations Analyst USPS Honolulu/Washington D.C.; Brian Wessling, Director Airport/Cargo Operations; and Sam Shinohara, Finance Director, Continental Micronesia Airlines Guam; Len Isitoff, General Manager, Guam Micronesia, Matson Navigation; Steve Bassack, Postal Inspector Guam USPS; Heran Bellu, Postmaster General, Marshall Islands; and Ponciano Materne, Postmaster General Palau.
“We did a good job in delivering the packages and mail last year because of these kinds of preparations. We foresee that we can have a smooth flow this time except that we cannot predict the weather,” Tudela said.
Guam and Saipan have the biggest volume of deliveries in the region, but there is no available data.
Tudela said they expect a drop in volume in all the areas this time due to the current financial crisis around the world.
