Tuhu Producton wins best booth at Sabalu market
A family-run fruit stall was adjudged the best booth during a competition among members of the Saipan Sabalu Farmers Market Association on Saturday to celebrate Thanksgiving Day.
Tuhu Producton Lancharro, owned and managed by Eugenio Borja and family, made a Christmas tree using different kinds of fruits like papaya, mango, cocoa, tangerine, and soursop (guyabano) as decoration, earning the nod of the three judges. Other products on display were bananas and tropical flowers.
“We’re so glad,” said Borja’s son, Ike. His daughter Auria and grandchild Michelle helped him with the concept. They pocketed the top prize of $100.
Carmen’s Nursery, specializing in orchids, placed second for $75, Food Merchant International (fruits and vegetables) was third for $50 and Saipan Farm and Garden settled for fourth and won $25.
There are a total of 34 members of the association.
The group’s president, Bill Ada, said the winners were judged based on the natural materials they used, creativity and compliance with the theme, “Thanksgiving to showcase the beauty of our islands.”
Each booth was given a turkey and a sack of fertilizer.
“We are very happy with the big turnout. We also provided snacks for them and all visitors,” Ada said.
The group also prepared lunch and live entertainment that spiced up the once-a-year special treat.
One of the organizers, Bernie Aldan, said this is a way of giving appreciation to the hardworking farmers and to motivate them to continue planting and harvesting.
“We thanked them and the members of the board for their full support of this event,” she said.
