DPS to launch anti-drunk driving campaign
The Department of Public Safety will be kicking of the 2008 3D (Drunk and Drugged Driving) prevention program tomorrow, Nov. 26, 2008, to inform he public that DPS will be out in full force looking for and cracking down on impaired drivers this holiday season.
Drunk driving is one of America’s deadliest crimes. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in December 2005, 1,033 people were killed in crashes involving a driver with an illegal blood alcohol concentration level of .08 or above.
“Because the holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day is one of the deadliest and most dangerous times on our roadways due to impaired driving, we will be conducting sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and using undercover officers to get more drunk drivers off the road,” said DPS spokesman Police Officer Jason T. Tarkong.
Designating a sober driver and not letting friends drive drunk are just two of several simple steps to help avoid a tragic crash or an arrest for impaired driving.
DPS is asking for volunteers who are interested in being designated drivers to show up with a copy of their driver’s license tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2008 at DPS Central at 6pm and meet with Police Officer John Cabrera.
There will also be a proclamation signing at DPS Central tomorrow at 11am. (DPS)
