Trade school to qualify for tax credits under bill
A lawmaker has introduced legislation that would extend the education tax credit program to a recently opened trade school on Saipan.
Under the bill sponsored by Rep. Justo Quitugua, donors to Marianas Trade Institute will be able receive tax credits for their contributions.
The measure, according to the author, is necessary to help Marianas Trade Institute to create more programs and accommodate local students who wish to get vocational training.
“With the upcoming implementation of federal immigration law…, there is an imminent need to train the resudents of the Commonwealth in the trades professsions including carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing, electrical, etc.,” says the bill.
“[T]he establishment of the Marianas Trade Institute is the first step to training such residents in the trades professions,” it adds. “However, with limited resources, the Marianas Trade Institute cannot expand its programs and accommodate the many students eager to participate in such training.”
The institutions currently covered by the tax credit program are Commonwealth Museum of History and Culture, Northern Mariana Islands Council for the Humanities, Public School System, Northern Marianas College, and the Joeten Kiyu Public Library.
