Susan and I spent the last week in Hawaii for our wedding anniversary. When we got into Honolulu last Saturday night we ran smack into an islandwide power outage.

Lightning hit the power station and the entire island of Oahu shut down just as we were getting our luggage and checking through Customs. The airport building was immediately transformed into Kalabera Cave at night, with lots of people with luggage all trying to get out of the building at one time, and the Customs folks trying to maintain order.

Fortunately, being from the Land of the Power Outage, I had a little flashlight on my key chain, and a medium-sized flashlight in my backpack. We had no trouble getting out into the street and getting a taxi into the city.

Apparently the hotels had power enough for the elevators but nothing else. There were no lights in any of the hotels, restaurants, or convenience stores.

The entire city shut down. It was total chaos. Susan and I were right at home.

The power came on the next morning and we were off to Kauai with minimal trouble.

In short, Saipan is a much better place to be during a power outage. Maybe it’s because we have so much experience in this area, i.e. power outages, brownouts, and rolling blackouts.

Most, if not all, of the hotels have generators; we have one at the Veterinary Hospital, CHC and almost one at the airport. We still drive during blackouts, and hardly ever run into anyone in the dark.

So remember this the next time we have a power outage. You could be living on Hawaii where people have no idea what to do when the lights go out.

Thank you CUC.
